An extensive RCMP forensic search is underway on a South Nanaimo property in connection with the disappearance of a 16-year-old girl there.

Mikayla Chang hasn’t been seen in 13 days or posted on social media since vanishing. Now the home of 53 year old Steven Bacon who she was recently seen with is under the microscope and RCMP guard.

The moment Sabina Schulz saw Steven Bacon’s picture in connection with the disappearance of a 16-year-old Nanaimo girl she had a bad feeling.

“Really creepy. Not good,” says Schulz.

The Nanaimo property manager says she’d seen the two together just weeks ago, living at a home on the 600 block of Nanaimo’s Bruce Avenue that’s slated to be torn down for her company’s commercial development. She says 53-year-old
Steven Bacon was passing 16-year-old Mikayla Chang off as his daughter.

“He told me yeah he’s living there with his daughter,” says Schulz. “He’s staying there with his daughter and he can’t find a place to rent so he wants to stay.”

Wednesday night, RCMP Forensics teams moved in to comb the sprawling property. Staying through the night and erecting a black tent between the home and garage Thursday as RCMP kept guard from both sides of the lot.

“It’s very creepy that it’s so close in the neighbourhood here and you know everybody’s living their life and this is going on in the background,” says Schulz. “Yeah it’s a large property with lots of outbuildings and trailers and I think they were searching the outbuildings.”

Chang was last seen March 17th. RCMP say her social media activity has stopped entirely too.

“We’re getting a lot of tips from the public.

From surrounding areas as well and we are following up on those but we are looking extensively in the Nanaimo area at this point.” says Nanaimo RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien.

Chang was reported missing by her family nearly two weeks ago, but one neighbour tells us he saw Bacon within the past week. Now they both have vanished.

“And we think he may have some information were she’s disappeared to,” says O’Brien.

Forensics investigators could be seen removing clothing and bags of evidence from the home that Steven Bacon lived in on Bruce Avenue throughout the day but RCMP say the file remains a missing
persons investigation. With an entire community hoping this missing girl turns up safe and soon.
