Tillicum Road will have protected bike lanes installed as part of the district's active transportation plan.

Two general-purpose vehicle lanes will be removed to install protected bike lanes along Tillicum Road in Saanich.

Construction is scheduled to start in early August and is expected to last until late 2022.

“I’m thrilled to see this safety improvement move forward this summer,” said Rebecca Mersereau, councillor and chair of the Active Transportation Committee, in a news release.

“Council is committed to road safety. We know improving conditions for pedestrians and cyclists on Tillicum will address an important gap in safe infrastructure and help enable residents to have multiple transportation options.”

Two general-purpose and one left-turning lane will remain along Tillicum Road from Arena Road near Tillicum Centre to Saanich’s boundary with the Township of Esquimalt at Tillicum Road Bridge.

Council approved this project in March 2022 as part of its Quick Build Active Transportation Projects. The estimated budget for the bike lanes is $500,000.
