Saanich police are asking the public to be “bear aware” after multiple bear sightings in the area of Jasmine Avenue, off Grange Road.

The bear was spotted “over the last few days,” according to Saanich police in a news release Saturday night. They’re asking the public not to approach or antagonize the animal.

“Please ‘bear’ in mind that loose garbage, compost and uncollected produce from fruit trees can attract wildlife from their natural habitat to more urban settings,” said police in the release.

They say the B.C. Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) is aware of the recent sightings. On its website, the BCCOS lists tips on what to do when spotting a bear, including staying calm, keeping away, going indoors and watching the animal until it leaves.

Anyone who has an encounter with a bear is asked to call Saanich police at 250-475-4321.
