The Saanich Police Department held a grand opening for its Community Safety Office, located in Uptown, on Thursday.

The space will serve as its flagship office for the department’s Community Engagement Division and allow for police to expand their community policing functions.

The new space means members of the public will have opportunities to become more involved and engage as volunteers.

The office will be run by a team of dedicated volunteers, assisting the coordinator of Crime Preventions Programs in sharing information and resources with those who need it, while continuing to support programs like Block Watch, Speed Watch, Lock Out Auto Crime and more.

Saanich’s mayor says the new office space isn’t just a place for policing matters. He hopes that it can turn into a community hub.

“They can come and have a quiet conversation. There’s the coffee shops and restaurants as well but some people may just want to have a quiet meeting. We hope it’s going to be used by all members of the community.” said Fred Haynes.

The office is located at 3680 Uptown Blvd., Unit 111. It will be open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
