The Saanich Police Department has arrested a 76-year-old man after local beach-goers witnessed him performing an alleged indecent act over the weekend.

According to police, officers received a report at approximately 4:15 p.m. on Saturday, July 24, from a disturbed member of the public at Hamsterly Beach in Elk / Beaver Lake Regional Park.

The witness reported to police that she saw a man sitting in a chair by the water’s edge and was suspected to be masturbating.

Saanich PD says the suspect matched the description from two previous incidents that were reported to police at the same location on June 19 and June 27.

The witness was able to record the licence plate of the suspect’s vehicle prior to reporting the incident to the Saanich Police.

The day following the report, police say they were able to locate the suspect and arrest him.

He was later released with a court date in September and with conditions of not to attend a park, swimming area, playground or school where children under the age of 16 are present.

At this time, police continue to investigate further and are currently recommending one count of committing an indecent act.

“While the investigation is still ongoing, we believe this suspect to be the same person in each of the three incidents reported from Hamsterly Beach,” adds Const. Markus Anastasiades with Saanich Police.
