Firefighters from the Saanich Fire Department quickly extinguished flames in an early morning garage fire.

Firefighters from the Saanich Fire Department responded to an early morning garage fire on Wedgepoint Terrace, and were able to quickly douse the flames.

Michael Kaye, assistant deputy chief of the department, says around 6:30 a.m. this morning, the department was alerted by the home’s security system that the fire alarm was going off.

“A unit arrived and found a little bit of smoke and a lot of heat and found discovered there was a fire in the garage,” Kaye said. “So had four more units respond. They managed to go in the door to the garage and to get the fire out quickly.”

Kaye says the homeowners were not home at the time, but the family’s cat was in the house.

“It had taken on a fair bit of smoke and they managed to get the cat out and get some oxygen therapy, and the cat seems to be okay,” Kaye said. “The homeowners daughter arrived and was able to take the cat to the vet this morning.”

Kaye says damage from the fire is limited to a small area of the garage, and some smoke damage in the home. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

He says it is a good thing the homeowner’s fire alarm was working, as crews were able to get on scene quickly to limit the amount of damage.
