A single-family home in Saanich lies in ruins after a fire tore through the structure on Friday morning.

Crews were called to the home in the 3200-block of Linwood Avenue around 8 a.m.

They arrived to find the bungalow fully engulfed in flames.

Neighbour Kamilla Paulo said she looked out the window and saw a bunch of smoke coming out of the house.

“I just thought oh they burnt their breakfast or something, but then I looked back and I saw red flames coming out of the house and I kind of panicked,” Paulo said.

The fire punched through the home’s windows. Witnesses heard an explosive pop before seeing a naked woman sprinting out in sheer panic.

“My understanding was that she was in the shower and just had to get out of the house, because it was quite smoke, so she just left with nothing,” Heather Steward said.

“We are told there was a resident who was home at the time,” said Asst. Deputy Chief Robert Heppell of the Saanich Fire Department.

“She was taken to hospital by paramedics because of possible respiratory exposure to fire gasses.”

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. The flames engulfed the home and black smoke could be seen all the way in downtown Victoria. The fire was contained by mid norning.

“We have investigators on scene,” said Heppell.

“They won’t be entering the building until we determine it is safe to do so.”
