Battle for Vancouver Island down to the wire as NDP and Green leaders campaign in Nanaimo and Victoria

Where political party leaders spend the final days of an election campaign usually says a lot about which ridings the party is still battling for, so it is telling that Jagmeet Singh and Elizabeth May will both be on Vancouver Island all-day Friday.

The two leaders will essentially shadow each other for much of the day.

The NDP leader began his day in Nanaimo with candidate Bob Chamberlin, before heading to Port Alberni to campaign with Gord Johns. Singh will hold two events in Victoria on Friday afternoon including at UVic and a 6 p.m. rally in Oak Bay.

The Green Party leader also starts the day in Nanaimo with candidate Paul Manly, before heading to Duncan to join Lydia Hwitsum, who is running in Cowichan-Malahat-Langford. May will also campaign with candidate David Merner in Saanich, before holding three events in Vic West and Saanich including a rally with Merner and Victoria candidate Racelle Kooy in Lime Bay Park at 4:15 p.m.

The NDP entered the 2019 campaign holding five of seven Vancouver Island seats including North Island-Powell River, but the Greens hope for a breakthrough was boosted by Paul Manly’s by-election win in Nanaimo-Ladysmith in May.

The polls suggest the front running Conservatives and Liberals are still neck-and-neck heading into the final weekend of the campaign.

Andrew Scheer will spend Friday in New Brunswick and Quebec, including in Beauce in the riding held by his former leadership rival and current People’s Party Leader Maxime Bernier.

Justin Trudeau will be campaigning around Toronto, where his party is banking on winning a large number of seats in the so-called 905, the expansive suburban areas and exurban surrounding the city.

Bernier is in Quebec City on Friday.
