A suspected armed robber was chased from a Nanaimo gas station on Saturday by the owner who was holding a baseball bat.

According to Nanaimo RCMP, at around 4 p.m., a man with a knife allegedly attempted to rob the Super Save gas station at 450 Wakesiah Avenue. Police were called to the area after a passerby reported seeing a man being chased by another man who had a baseball bat.

When officers got the area, the owner of the Super Save said he had chased the armed suspect out of the store after he attempted to steal a display case of Zippo lighters.

The owner told police he decided to grab a nearby bat and when the suspect saw it, he darted for the door. He was followed by the owner and ran northbound along Wakesiah Avenue.

We do not condone the actions taken by the owner as it could have lead to him being seriously injured. The best course of action is to comply and call 911, Const. Gary O’Brien, media relations officer with the Nanaimo RCMP, said.

The male suspect is described as approximately six-feet-tall with dark skin. He was last seen wearing a dark coat, sunglasses, hat, blue shirt, blue jeans and gloves. Police said his face was concealed by a scarf.

Police did release a picture but added that it is poor quality.

Anyone who has information on the identity of the suspect or the alleged robbery, they are asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
