Road to Recovery: Carving a bold future for the Snuneymuxw First Nation

CHEK

In this week’s episode of Road to Recovery with Douglas Magazine, CHEK’s Jasmine Bala sits down with Ian Simpson, CEO of Petroglyph Development Group.

Petroglyph Development Group is the economic development arm of the Snuneymuxw First Nation, located in the centre of Coast Salish territory on the eastern coast of Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and the Fraser River.

The Snuneymuxw First Nation is one of the largest nations in the province, with a population of more than 1,700. They are part of the 30-billion dollar Indigenous economy in Canada, growing their portfolio of businesses and entering into new partnerships that support the nation’s goals for prosperity.

The Petroglyph Development Group works “to realize the economic potential of Snuneymuxw First Nation, bringing forth our Snuneymuxw Snuw’uyulth, the teachings passed down from our Ancestors and elders, into the business realm,” according to its website.

Simpson explains in this segment what projects the group has been working on, offers advice for non-Indigenous entrepreneurs who want to work with First Nation communities, and discusses the challenges the group faces when building up the nation’s economy.

Road to Recovery is done in partnership with Douglas Magazine.
