Rex, a four-year-old pit bull-mastiff cross, was euthanized on Nov. 6, 2018.

The Capital Regional District Bylaw and Animal Care Services has confirmed that a four-year-old pitbull-mastiff cross that attacked four people in Colwood on the weekend has been euthanized.

Kyla Johnson was severely injured when her dog Rex, who she had rescued six months before, attacked her and three others early Saturday morning. Two men in the group had been drinking and playing a video game when something triggered the dog to snap.

The dog initially jumped on Johnson’s father then went after Johnson, her fiance and her aunt. Three of them had to be taken to hospital.

A petition was launched to save Rex but it was not effective.

CRD Bylaw and Animal Care Services said it very rarely puts an animal down but due to public safety and liability reasons, Rex was euthanized on Tuesday. Chief Bylaw Officer Don Brown said on Monday very little was known about Rex’s past. Johnson took him in six months ago after learning his previous owner on the Lower Mainland was going to put him down. He may have had several owners before.

Brown did remind people that if they are looking to rescue an animal, they should choose a reputable organization.
