Repair work underway on damage caused by major flood at Pearkes Recreation Centre in Saanich

Saanich crews and contractors are repairing damage caused by a large-scale flood in August at the Pearkes Recreation Centre.

The District of Saanich says a broken water pipe in the mechanical room of the library caused the flood on August 23.

Remediation work was finished in mid-September.

The cost of the damages due to the flood is estimated at approximately $500,000.

The District credits the quick actions of municipal and library staff for limiting the damage, and say the archives collection sustained only minimal damage.

The Saanich Centennial Branch of the Greater Victoria Library, Saanich Archives and the Queen Alexandra room will remain closed, with all facilities expected to reopen in late December.

The District of Saanich says all library material drop boxes will be open along the exterior wall of the Centennial branch as of November 1.

A temporary pick-up station will be set up in the lobby of the Pearkes Recreation Centre where library patrons will be able to pick up items during established service hours.
