Saanich crews will begin work this month to install new traffic lights aimed at clearing congestion and increase safety and access for pedestrians at a busy intersection.

Four main traffic signal poles will be replaced at the intersection of Quadra Street and McKenzie Avenue and include timing adjustments.

The changes are designed to coordinate with other signals along the McKenzie Ave. corridor and reduce congestion.

New pedestrian controls will also be installed.

Upgrades will be made at the B.C. Transit eastbound stop on McKenzie Ave. to provide a larger waiting area and a new shelter.

The district says crews are trying to take advantage of lower traffic volumes with the end of the school season.

Message boards will be in place to advise drivers on construction hours and updates will be provided on Saanich’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.

The work is expected to last until September.
