Port Alberni RCMP say they are investigating after a woman was found dead near the Victoria Quay.

According to an RCMP press release, at around 2:30 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to an area near Roger Street and Victoria Quay after a woman was found unresponsive.

The woman was eventually pronounced dead on the scene despite attempts by BCEHS and the Port Alberni Fire Department, who were on the scene first, to save her life.

Mounties, the press release notes, say a vehicle of interest left the scene prior to officers arriving and describe the incident as “suspicious.”

“Our officers have spoken with witness and have canvassed for video in the area. Officers have identified the vehicle of interest, which has been seized as the investigations continues,” said RCMP Const. Richard Johns. “If anyone has dash camera video in the area between 1:30 a.m. and 2:45 a.m. or may have witnessed anything of concern, we urge you to call the Port Alberni detachment.”

Port Alberni RCMP General Investigative Service has assumed control of the investigation and is continuing to work with the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service and the BC Coroners Service, the press release notes.
