Mounties are looking for anyone who might have witnessed a man being assaulted and left injured on the grounds of a Duncan elementary school.

Officers were called by paramedics attending to an injured man at Alexander Elementary School on Beverly Street at around 12:20 a.m. Thursday morning, RCMP said in a news release.

When they arrived they found the adult man in the playground area of the school with serious facial injuries “consistent with an assault.”

Because of the nature of his injuries the victim was unable to give a description of his attacker or attackers, police said, and he was taken to hospital for treatment.

Investigators believe the man was involved in an altercation with a group of people in the hour prior to the assault.

BC RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Chris Manseau countered rumours surfacing online that the man was attacked with weapons.

“There is no indication that any weapons were used in this altercation, contrary to rumors on social media. The public is asked not to perpetuate these rumors as they can interfere with the investigation,” he said.

Investigators say a group of youths may have been at the playground either prior to or as the assault occurred.

Forensic officers gathered evidence throughout Thursday morning and the playground has since reopened.

Police are now asking anyone with information or possible surveillance images or video of the incident to contact them at 250-746-5522.
