Lake Cowichan RCMP are asking for public assistance in an investigation into a series of arsons that occurred in late August.

In a release posted Friday, the Lake Cowichan RCMP say they received multiple reports on August 22, 2019 of three fires, believed to have been deliberately started in the area of Skutz Falls and May Rd. They say that a man riding a BMX-style bicycle was seen in the area at the time of one of the incidents.

Lake Cowichan RCMP describe the invidual as white, skinny, with dark hair, black pants, and a fedora-style hat, and possible facial hair.

The RCMP credit “fast thinking bystanders” for quickly extinguishing the fires in the area, and say that the man on the bike fled prior to police attendance.

Cst. Forshaw asks that people be mindful of the extreme potential for forest fires at this time of year. They can be easily started and quickly get out of control, potentially causing damage to property and even worse injury or death.

Lake Cowichan RCMP are asking that anyone with information related to the fires or the man contact the Lake Cowichan RCMP Office by phone at 250-749-6668, and reference police file 2019-1525.
