RCMP notify IIO after man died following arrest in Courtenay

The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO) that resulted in the death of one man in Courtenay after he was arrested.

The incident took place at approximately 4:30 a.m. on April 23 when officers with the Comox Valley RCMP attended a home in Courtenay after receiving a report of an unknown person on the property.

The attending officers located and arrested one man who was believed to be intoxicated. He was taken into police custody and brought to RCMP cells without incident, according to a report.

During the course of regular wellness checks, an officer noticed that the man was sitting against a wall and was not responsive.

Officers provided first aid until Emergency Health Services arrived and took over providing medical aid before transporting the man to the hospital where he later died.

The incident has been passed on by RCMP to the IIO and all aspects and circumstances will be the subject of an independent investigation.

No further information will be released by the police at this time as a result of the investigation.
