The BC Highway Patrol says dozens of impaired drivers were taken off the roads near Lake Cowichan during the B.C. Day long weekend.

The BC Highway Patrol worked with the Lake Cowichan RCMP to monitor traffic around Lake Cowichan during the overlapping long weekend and SunFest Music Festival.

Over the weekend, RCMP say 26 drivers were stopped, and three prohibited drivers were taken off the road.

Police say that the total is relatively low considering how many people were driving through the area to attend the music festival or camp during the long weekend.

“While 26 impaired drivers are a concerning number, given the large number of drivers who were screened for impairment by BCHP and Lake Cowichan officers it shows that the majority of drivers are making safe choices,” said Staff Sgt. Adam Tallboy, officer in charge of BCHP Vancouver Island.

“I especially want to thank all those designated drivers who assisted getting their friends and family home safely,” he said in a release Thursday.

In total, 226 violation tickets were issued during the long weekend in the Lake Cowichan area.
