An RCMP explosives unit detonated a ‘suspicious’ bottle at Parksville Community Park at around midnight on April 9.

Oceanside RCMP were called to the park at 5:15 p.m. on April 8 after they received reports of a “suspicious” bottle. Police then found a plastic bottle with a taped lid abandoned near a swing set. The bottle was filled with a brightly-coloured unknown liquid and appeared to have something floating inside.

Police said out of an abundance of caution, the RCMP Explosive Disposal (EDU) came over from the Lower Mainland. The Parksville Fire Department secured the area and the EDU officers used an explosive to detonate the bottle at around midnight.

According to Oceanside RCMP, at this time, it is not known whether the device was something dangerous or a hoax made to look like a homemade explosive.

“Regardless, a lot of resources and stress resulted in the actions of someone, someone the RCMP would like to identify and speak with,” Cpl. Jesse Foreman, media spokesperson with Oceanside RCMP, said in a statement.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Oceanside RCMP at 250-248-6111 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-222-8477.
