A man has been found dead in the ocean off Gabriola Island, and police and BC Coroner investigations are now underway.

Mounties responded to a report of a deceased person in the water near Dragons Lane, on the island’s east side, around 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, according to Gabriola Island RCMP.

“The deceased man has been positively identified as a non-Gabriola resident,” RCMP said in a news release Tuesday.

“The circumstances around the death are being investigated, however, criminality is not suspected.”

RCMP say the BC Coroners Service is also investigating.

Gabriola Island, one of the Gulf Islands in the Strait of Georgia, is located east of Nanaimo.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call RCMP at 250-247-8333.
