A new initiative aimed at helping transport essential goods along Highway 4 is scheduled to begin Sunday.

Starting Sunday, convoys carrying essential supplies will take priority along the detour.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure says it will lead four piloted convoys daily to help commercial vehicles safely transport essential supplies.

Starting Sunday, the MOTI says it will offer the guided trip:

  • Every day at 5 a.m. from Lake Cowichan
  • Every day at 10 a.m. from Port Alberni
  • Every day at 3 p.m. from Lake Cowichan
  • Every day at 8 p.m. from Port Alberni

The ministry says that commercial vehicles can travel outside of these windows, however, there will be no pilot vehicles to scout ahead and help guide traffic.

Non-commercial vehicle traffic travelling during these times will be forced to travel behind the convoy, as essential supplies such as food and fuel will be taking priority.
