Pat Horgan, the older brother of Premier John Horgan, has passed away following a long battle with cancer.

The 71-year-old died on Jan. 6. The premier’s office issued a statement Thursday expressing sadness at the death of Pat Horgan.

“He will be deeply missed by his family and friends,” the statement said.

A service is being held in Port McNeill on Feb. 10. In lieu of flowers, the premier’s office said donations can be made to the BC Cancer Agency in support of lung cancer research. Messages to the family can be sent to [email protected].

Premier Horgan has previously referred to his brother as a father-figure who took on many family duties following their father’s death when the premier was 18 months old.

Horgan was often at his brother’s bedside in off-hours during last year’s spring election campaign.

The premier became publicly emotional about his brother’s terminal illness on several occasions, with the most recent being in last month’s announcement of the government’s decision to complete construction of the Site C dam.
