Wind gusts up to 80 km/h knocked out power Sunday morning to more than 30,000 BC Hydro customers on Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and the Lower Mainland.

The wind also cancelled or delayed BC Ferries sailings on the major routes and sailings to the Gulf Islands and the Sunshine Coast. The next sailing from Swartz Bay is expected at 11 am.

A wind warning remains in effect for Greater Victoria, the Southern Gulf Islands and Metro Vancouver.

Environment Canada says the intense Pacific frontal system is moving slowly eastward across the South Coast this morning and will pass through the Lower Mainland just before noon today.

The south winds will ease at around 30 to 50 km/h in the wake of the system later this morning.

High waves were also seen in Sidney Sunday morning amidst localized flooding and driftwood debris.
