Port Hardy firefighters saved a resident trapped in a burning apartment Wednesday afternoon, officials say.

Crews were called to the New Horizon Apartments on Highland Drive at 2:18 p.m. and found a rapidly growing fire in a ground-level unit. Multiple witnesses told Chief Brent Borg, the first one on scene, that a person was trapped in the unit.

A ladder truck arrived shortly after and set up a water supply while two other teams started fighting the flames and searching for the trapped resident. The firefighters forced the door of the apartment open and found the resident. She was taken to paramedics while firefighters brought the blaze under control. She was later taken to hospital.

Port Hardy Fire Rescue said the fire was quickly brought under control and contained to a single unit. After it was extinguished and the building was ventilated, tenants were able to return to their apartments. The tenants were evacuated for just under two hours.

“We would like to remind the public and occupants of apartment complexes to not ignore fire alarms—when the alarm sounds, evacuate, no questions asked,” the fire department wrote in a Facebook post about the fire.
