Port Alberni will mark a first by holding a ceremony for the permanent raising of two local First Nations flags at city hall.

The flags of Tseshaht First Nation and Hupacasath First Nation will soon be permanently displayed at the municipal building.

The ceremony will be held Monday at 12:15 p.m. in recognition of National Indigenous People’s Day.

The city says the establishment of the flags was one of 27 recommendations brought forward by its reconciliation committee in 2019.

The event will also be streamed on Facebook Live.
