Port Alberni RCMP are searching for a missing boater who disappeared on Monday evening.

The 66-year-old man disappeared in the remote location of Rainy Bay in the Alberni Inlet/Barkley Sound area, according to RCMP. They say the man’s boat was found adrift after he left camp to go find cell service, and his companions called 911 and Mayday on a VHF radio.

The Canadian Coast Guard Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC), Ucluelet RCMP and West Coast Marine Services of the RCMP went to search in the location but didn’t find the man, according to police.

Police say the missing man has an address in the Lower Mainland but has family ties to Port Alberni. They say his family has been notified but his identity won’t be disclosed by police at the moment.

Police say the search is continuing from Port Alberni with the West Coast Marine Services and Underwater Recovery Team.
