Police say a 24-year-old man was killed in a rollover crash off Cameron Main, past Port Alberni, early Friday morning.

The crash on the logging road, which goes up to Mount Arrowsmith, happened at around 12:30 a.m.

RCMP say a Jeep SUV with seven people was travelling on Cameron Main, off the Alberni Highway, when it may have come across some poor road conditions. The SUV went off the road, rolling over several times while falling down an approximate 250-foot (76 metre) cliff. The SUV stopped on its side in a river at the bottom of an embankment.

Police say when they first arrived on scene, four occupants in the vehicle had climbed up the embankment and had met with emergency crews on the road. One occupant who was too injured to climb up the embankment and one who remained with the injured person were rescued by Port Alberni firefighters and RCMP.

Another person who had been in the vehicle was found down the embankment in some water. He was in serious medical distress, police said.

With the help of the Port Alberni Fire Department, he was rescued, then immediately transported to the West Coast General Hospital. He was later flown by BC Air Ambulance to a Victoria hospital. The man, a 24-year-old from Port Alberni, has since died from the injuries received in this collision.

All the other people who were in the SUV were treated for their injuries at the scene and later taken to West Coast General Hospital.

Police said the Vancouver Island Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service. The driver of the SUV is co-operating, police said, and it appears that alcohol was not a factor.

The BC Coroners Service was contacted and is in the early stages of its fact-finding investigation. The BC Coroners Service investigates all sudden, unexpected and/or unnatural deaths in the province to determine who died, how, where, when and by what means.
