Local veterans and members of the Canadian Legion kicked off the poppy campaign in Victoria at noon.

The Poppy Flag was raised at City Hall at 12 p.m. and a poppy was pinned on Acting Mayor Chris Coleman.

It symbolized the official start of the annual fundraising campaign that provides financial assistance to serving and former Canadian Armed Forces and their families. The campaign runs from Oct. 27 to Nov. 11.

Lt.-Gov. Judith Guichon received the first poppy at a ceremonial opening of the poppy campaign on Tuesday.

The annual poppy campaign is staffed entirely by volunteers through the Canadian Legion.

Poppies will be available by donation at City Hall.
