A man had to be tackled after he was caught stealing things from a construction site in Esquimalt on Halloween night, say police.

According to a Victoria Police Department press release, patrol officers responded to a break and enter in progress at a construction site in the 1000-block of Tillicum Road at around 6 p.m. on Oct. 31.

When officers arrived, they quickly located the suspect, who was allegedly stealing various items from the construction site, say VicPD.

However, before officers could actually arrest the suspect, he fled the scene on foot.

VicPD says officers chased the suspect, who was arrested after one officer jumped over a fence and tackled him.

“The suspect reported stiffness and soreness following the arrest but declined medical attention,” the department said in its release.

It turns out, the suspect, who was not identified, was also wanted on several outstanding warrants for break and enter from across the region.

Furthermore, VicPD says the man was actually breaching several conditions of a conditional sentence order related to convictions for multiple counts of break and enter and uttering threats, at the time of his arrest.

One of the conditions included being under house arrest, they say.

The department says the suspect was transported to cells where he was held in custody to await a bail hearing and that the incident remains under investigation.
