Police seized an airsoft rifle that was being used for target practice at a beach at Balmacarra Park on April 24.

Police responding to reports of two men at a Saanich beach with a long gun quickly learned it was an airsoft gun being used for target practice.

Saanich Police say around 7 p.m. on April 24, someone called to report the two men walking with a gun along a path at Balmacarra Park.

When officers arrived, they saw two men that matched the description getting into a vehicle.

After conducting a high-risk traffic stop, the officers found an airsoft rifle in the trunk.

The men explained they were target shooting at the beach, and were “immediately apologetic” that their actions caused concern in the community.

“Please remember that police treat all firearms as if they are a real threat until deemed otherwise, and that calls like this put the public and police at significant risk,” said Const. Markus Anastasiades in a news release.

There are currently no indoor or outdoor spaces in Saanich where the public can discharge any firearm or crossbow, which include pellet or bb guns, except in very specific situations.”

Police released both men without charges and seized the airsoft rifle.
