RCMP are asking anyone who may have witnessed or recorded a vehicle shortly before a multi-vehicle crash near Parksville last week.

According to Oceanside RCMP, officers and paramedics responded to a two-vehicle collision in the southbound lanes of Highway 19 near Highway 4, north of Parksville on Sept. 11.

RCMP say a male driver of a 2007 grey or silver Chevrolet HHR attempted to overtake a red 2015 Nissan Versa but clipped it, causing both vehicles to lose control.

The Chevrolet rolled off the highway and ended up on its roof, say RCMP, adding that the male driver was thrown from the vehicle and sustained serious injuries. The man was found under the HRR.

RCMP say the female driving the Nissan sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital.

This is a reminder to all motorists of the importance of always wearing your seatbelt as it is designed to keep you inside your vehicle in the event of a crash and it works in unison with airbags to prevent injury to occupants. In addition, police remind motorists to drive defensively, obey speed limits, and drive sober every time you get behind the wheel,” said Oceanside RCMP in the release.

According to RCMP, Central Vancouver Island Traffic Services (CVITS) unit conducted an investigation into the crash and suspect impairment and a lack of seatbelts as contributing factors to the crash. They are requesting additional witnesses to the crash, including anyone who witnessed or recorded the pre-collision driving behaviour of the Chevrolet.

Anyone with information should call CVITS at 250-248-6111.
