Esquimalt Division Patrol officers are asking the public for help in locating two key witnesses and a suspect in an Esquimalt sexual assault.

Police say that the incident took place on Wednesday, Feb. 9 at approximately 3:45 p.m. near the bus stop in the 1300-block of Esquimalt Road.

Officers say a man approached a 16-year-old girl near the bus stop, which scared her and led the girl to walk away from the man.

Police state that the man then followed closely behind her while committing an indecent act.

Two witnesses, a man and a woman, observed the assault and intervened, according to police. The male witness proceeded to chase the suspect on foot, who was last seen leaving the area southbound on Admirals Road.

The 16-year-old left the area immediately and police say she was not physically injured during the incident.

Investigators are looking to identify and speak with both the suspect and the two key witnesses who intervened.

The suspect is being described as a man, approximately 60 years old, standing five feet, nine inches to six feet tall.

He had a stubble-length beard at the time of the incident and has a skinny build.

He was wearing dark clothes, including a dark hoodie, and a backpack.

The incident was reported to VicPD on February 10. Officers began the investigation immediately, which included a canvass for surveillance video.

A portion of the incident was captured on video but from a significant distance, note Victoria Police, however, the video was able to help assist officers with the suspect and witness descriptions.

If you are either of the two witnesses or have information about this incident, please call the VicPD Report Desk at (250) 995-7654 extension 1.

To report what you know anonymously, please call Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
