Police say they are looking for a man who was caught performing an indecent act near children at a Greater Victoria beach.

Police say they are looking for a man who was caught allegedly performing an indecent act near children at a Greater Victoria beach.

According to the Saanich Police Department, witnesses reported seeing a man allegedly masturbating at the Hamsterly Beach, located at Elk Lake, at around 4:15 p.m. on June 27.

Police say the man was sitting in a chair and appeared to be watching children playing on the beach near the water’s edge at the time of the alleged incident.

“While our officers continue to investigate this disturbing incident, we are appealing to the public for any information, as the beach and surrounding area were very busy over the weekend and there may be witnesses out there that have yet to come forward,” Const. Markus Anastasiades of the Saanich Police said in a media release.

Although officers responded to the beach, the man had already left the area before they could arrive.

The suspect is described as a medium to heavy-build Caucasian male in this 50s or 60s who is approximately five-foot-six inches tall. He was last seen wearing a beige “Tilley” style hat, a beige shirt, dark shorts, and had a webbed folding chair with him.

Police also say the man was seen leaving the Hamsterly Beach parking lot in a beige coloured SUV with a large bike rack on the back.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Saanich Police Department at 250-475-4321 or they can report anonymously to the Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
