Starting Friday, all outdoor recreation facilities including playgrounds, lacrosse box and basketball courts, will reopen in Victoria.

Level 2 of the city’s parks and recreation Covid-19 recovery plan was approved by council Thursday.

The next level of the gradual reopening of recreational programs and services includes reopening all outdoor recreation facilities, as well as details for the safe operation of summer camps and outdoor adult health and wellness programs at Royal Athletic Park.

It also includes a return to community group park and field bookings.

“Recreation and play are essential elements of community health and well-being,” Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps said in a release.

“For many children and families, shooting some hoops or getting back to your favourite swings and monkey bars will feel like a significant milestone in the recovery process.”

The city says reopening recreation programs will be done in managed stages, guided by advice from public health authorities, industry guidelines, requirements from WorkSafeBC and direction from council.

New signs will be posted at outdoor recreation facilities for COVID-19 guidelines for use.

Those include frequent hand washing and not using equipment or attending programs when sick.

The city says public washrooms with enhanced cleaning are available close to most facilities.

The Crystal Pool and Fitness Centre will remain closed with an anticipated reopening next January.

The facility will stay closed primarily because of a major ventilation repair that is required.
