The summer fun is going to the dogs in Victoria — literally.

Dressed up doggies of all sizes took part in the “Big Gay Dog Walk” at Beacon Hill Park Friday evening.

It’s estimated about 100 dogs and their owners took part, with dogs getting gussied up in tutus, ladybug suits, superhero costumes and even butterfly wings.

The pooches showed off their style and there were prizes for best costume.

“I’m hoping to win this year,” says participant Patricia McAllister, who brought three dogs with her. “I have like three human dressers full of dog clothes, one for each season — Halloween, Christmas, whatever, so I just collect things and actually I got the tutus the dogs are wearing from the second-hand shop. They’re kids tutus.”

The annual event also included a trick contest and organizers say it gets bigger every year.

“That’s what I love about this event too,” says Big Gay Dog Walk organizer Eva Patenaude. “It’s so visible so you have a lot of people who didn’t necessarily know it was happening but see it and come and join the fun.”

The event is put on by the Victoria Pride Society and it’s part of the pride week festivities in Victoria this weekend.
