Port Alberni RCMP said they are working to confirm that the information Jan Stelmaszyk posted on social media is accurate after he wrote on Instagram that he and his three-year-old son were not missing.

Thirty-five-year-old Jan Stelmaszyk and his three-year-old son Matt Bartnik were reported missing on Thursday after they had not been heard from for four days. A missing persons investigation was launched based on concerns conveyed to police, Port Alberni RCMP said.

Police believed they were camping in the Victoria area, but Stelmaszyk posted on Instagram on Friday to say they were in Italy.

“Investigators are aware that there are claims on social media advising that the individuals we are searching for are okay, but out of the country,” Port Alberni RCMP said in a release.

“Our efforts right now are to conclusively confirm that information on social media is accurate. In order to conclude a missing person’s investigation, we do need to speak directly with the individual and ensure all is well. Our investigation is progressing.”

As of Saturday, Stelmaszyk had posted more pictures from Italy to Instagram.
