A Victoria man woke up Thursday morning to find his father’s pickup truck, which has Texas licence plates, smashed up and spray-painted with the word “Trump.”

Jonathan Vidalin tweeted a picture of the truck, saying the windows were also smashed and the licence plates were stolen sometime overnight. He did not share the exact location of the truck.

Victoria police say they are investigating, calling the vandalism “disappointing and unacceptable.”

“People are in Canada, in B.C., for a variety of reasons with out-of-province or out-of-country plates. And we should treat them with a level of understanding and a level of empathy because we do not know everyone’s story and why they are here,” Const. Cam MacIntyre, public affairs officer for Victoria police, said.

Vidalin also wrote that his father is a Canadian citizen who lives in Texas. Vidalin said he was been here for almost three months, spent two weeks in quarantine and has been staying with him since Vidalin’s wife gave birth.
