A minivan and SUV damaged on the scene of a serious accident on the Malahat

A minivan and SUV damaged on the scene of a serious collision on the Malahat on June 9, 2018.

An online petition calling for an alternative route to the Malahat has almost 400 signatures and the number is continuing to climb.

The petition cites recent car accidents and resulting closures that severely delay traffic as evidence that the road is no longer sufficient to provide adequate access to both the north and south Island.

“Something must be done and an alternative route needs to be seriously considered,” writes Paul Russel, the creator of the petition.

Just this Sunday, a driver fell asleep at the wheel and drove head-on into the other line of traffic. The multi-vehicle crash had traffic on the Malahat snarled for the majority of the afternoon and into the night.

Those involved in the collision walked away largely unscathed with only minor injuries, but the crash had Shawnigan Lake RCMP cautioning the public.

“Please be cognizant on the road conditions, your own headspace and respect the speed limits,” says Cpl. Tina Chan of the Shawnigan Lake RCMP.

The petition says these collisions happen much too often.

“Monthly, sometimes weekly the Malahat is closed or severely delayed after a minor, serious or deadly crash,” wrote Russel on the petition.
