Pedestrians and cyclists got the rare chance to walk and ride down the centre of the deck on the old Johnson Street Bridge Friday.

Vehicle traffic has been blocked from the bridge since 9 a.m. in preparation for the Saturday ceremony, that will see the adjacent new Johnson Street Bridge open.

Mayor Lisa Helps said she was surprised at the number of visitors at the old bridge.

“It’s pretty fun actually,” she said. “The big celebration is going to be tomorrow, but we didn’t anticipate that today would just be a day for people to just wander through and walk right down the centre line.”

Saturday’s ceremony will run from 12 to 5 p.m. and will allow access by foot to the new $105 million bridge.

Music and activities are planned to take place on both bridges tomorrow, visitors are also encouraged to come by for a community picnic — as tables will be on both decks.

After 5 p.m. the new bridge will re-open at 9 p.m. and the first car will be allowed to cross — the old bridge will then be closed.

Drivers are advised to use the Bay Street Bridge until tomorrow evening.
