Nanaimo RCMP said a man was hit while in a crosswalk at Dover and Dickinson roads.

Nanaimo RCMP said a 62-year-old man suffered minor injuries after he was hit by a pickup truck while trying to cross at the Dover and Dickinson roads intersection.

Police said the man was legally crossing through the intersection when he was struck by a 77-year-old male driver attempting to make a left turn onto Dover Road at around 4 p.m. Thursday. According to police, the front of the truck struck the victim, knocking him off his feet and backwards a short distance.

B.C. paramedics took the man to hospital where he was treated for bumps, bruises and soreness. He was later discharged.

The driver remained on scene and co-operated with police.

“At the time of the collision, it was still daylight and while the pedestrian was crossing legally, it appears the driver may not have seen him. It was also noted by the investigators the victim was wearing reasonably dark clothing, Const. Gary O’Brien, media relations officer with the Nanaimo RCMP, said in a release.

O’Brien is also reminding pedestrians and drivers to be extremely cautious this time of year and said while this pedestrian had the right of way, all pedestrians should take a moment before stepping off the curb to ensure a driver sees them.

Drivers must ensure a crosswalk is clear and pause until they can safely finish their turn, O’Brien said.
