The Parksville Canada Post Office was evacuated and closed Thursday morning after a suspicious package was reported.

According to Sgt. Stephen Rose from the Oceanside RCMP, an employee was emptying a bag of parcels when they noticed a powdery substance emanating from inside, which prompted the evacuation of the building.

Police were called to the building on Island Highway East around 10 a.m. No injuries or illness were reported by Canada Post employees.

Rose said out of an abundance of caution, the post office is closed from the remainder of the day and a specialized unit from the Lower Mainland will be coming over to assess if the powder poses a risk.

A hazmat unit will also be arriving later this afternoon.
