The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating after an alleged impaired driver died following an encounter with Nanaimo RCMP officers early Sunday morning.

At around 1:14 a.m. on Oct. 28, Nanaimo RCMP received a call about a possible impaired driver. The driver was found and appeared to be impaired, the IIO said.

Officers decided that due to the man’s intoxication, he should be transported to hospital.

The IIO said Emergency Health Services (EHS) was contact but the man went into medical distress and Nanaimo RCMP officers administered medical assistance. The man was taken to hospital in serious but stable condition.

The BC Coroners Service later advised that the man died in hospital. The IIO is investigating whether the death was related to the actions or inactions of the officers involved.

The IIO investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
