The owner of an older model Chevrolet Suburban that was deemed a vehicle of interest in a fatal hit and run near Parksville has turned himself in.

According to an Oceanside RCMP media release issued Monday, a 55-year-old man from Woss turned himself into Kelowna RCMP yesterday night after seeing images of his Chevrolet Suburban in the news.

On Sunday, Oceanside RCMP released photos of a brown 1991 Chevrolet Suburban with damage to the driver’s side headlight and bug screen, saying it was a “vehicle of interest” in a fatal hit and run.

A woman was found dead in the grassy median along Inland Island Highway near the Alberni Highway interchange on the morning of Oct. 10 and the Central Vancouver Island Traffic Services believe she was the victim of a hit and run.

“Seemed kind of odd the type of accident to have occurred on the highway like that. It didn’t make any sense to me,” said Mike Brewster, a neighbour.

That’s because Brewster says there’s a highway underpass roughly 100 meters from where she tried to cross the highway that most locals know about.

“You can easily walk underneath,” Brewster said.

An area resident who collects bottles says it’s a dangerous stretch of highway to walk near as some driver’s speed.

“That’s pretty sad. I’ve known her for maybe five years. When I heard about it I started crying. I couldn’t believe it because she was a very nice person,” said Vince Powley, who says he knew the woman through his son.

Meanwhile, Oceanside RCMP says the 55-year-old has not been charged and an investigation into the incident continues.
