Overnight fire destroys house in Nanaimo

A fire early Wednesday morning destroyed a house in Nanaimo’s East Wellington area.

East Wellington firefighters responded to the fire on Webster Road at around 12:50 a.m. When crews arrived, the house was fully engulfed.

The fire department responded with three engines and Nanaimo Fire Rescue provided support. The fire destroyed the house but two shed within six metres of the house were saved.

According to the East Wellington Fire Department, two homeowners and their dog were able to make it out of the home safely. The two were treated for smoke inhalation.

The homeowner told officials he believed the fire started in the basement. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
