Crews were called to a report of a fire at KH Silver Nails on Fort Street at 1:53 a.m. Thursday, April 29, 2021.

The fire that significantly damaged a nail salon in Downtown Victoria on Thursday morning is now officially considered suspicious according to the Victoria Police Department.

Fire crews were called to KH Silver Nails on Fort Street at 1:53 a.m. Firefighters say they were also notified that police were also responding to an incident at the same address.

On arrival, firefighters noted there were significant smoke conditions and moderate fire conditions at the rear of the building.

“We did make entry and were able to suppress the fire relatively quickly, but there was significant smoke and water damage, and fire damage to the rear of the property as well,” said Victoria Fire deputy chief Dan Atkinson.

The total damage is estimated at $250,000, with an estimated $500,000 saved from damage.

Fire officials say it appears the blaze sparked at or near the rear of the business. The flames spread to a neighbouring business, damaging a nearby restaurant. Police say there were no injuries.

Victoria police also attended and one person was taken into custody.

A fire investigation team was on scene Thursday to determine the cause and Victoria Police are investigating this suspicious fire.
