Snowboarders said there was good visibility on Mount Washington as they made first tracks on opening day Friday.

“I couldn’t wait for it to open,” said Rhys Ladouceur, a snowboarder from Qualicum Beach. “[I’m] skipping school so don’t tell my teachers.”

“Pretty awesome,” said Buddy Shirley, also a snowboarder. “There’s lots of snow so what can I complain about?”

Last night the mountain got 18 centimetres of snow putting the base at 60 centimetres. With the resort also making snow they determined there was enough for a limited opening.

The Whiskeyjack chair, tube park along with the carpet rides are open from 9 am to 9 pm.

“Over the weekend more lifts and terrain are going to open as our team is able to and as snow conditions allow so stay tuned for more updates,” said Kayla Stockton, the resort’s Marketing Manager.

The Eagle Express is likely to open Saturday.

Stockton says she’s even itching to take some turns.

“I’m hoping to get up later today and get on the slopes and try the terrain. My first time up on Mount Washington. I’m new to the island,” said Stockton.

The resort planned to open two weeks ago but there wasn’t enough snow.

Those on the mountain are excited to be riding the slopes on opening day.

“It’s awesome,” said Tyler Campbell, a snowboarder. “I’ve been up a few times but [I’ve had] a couple of bails I’m not going to lie.”

“Better than expected,” said Kale Best, a skier. “It’s pretty heavy but you got to fight for it. It’s Mount Washington. It’s normal.”

“What a great day,” said Richard Varela, a snowboarder. “It’s like the coolest thing ever to be able to rock this beautiful snow.”

The resort has an event happening each of the next 12 days and with many people spending time over the holidays on the hill they’re hoping the next weather system coming next week will bring more snow.
