One person is being treated for smoke inhalation after a fire at a low-rise apartment building in the Fernwood neighbourhood.

The fire was reported at 5:54 p.m. at 1165 Yates Street.

Nineteen firefighters were called to the fire.

“The suite on the fourth floor had a pot on the stove which carried on into the cabinets and into the ceiling area,” said Battalion Chief Gary Birtwistle.

“The guys did a great job of getting in there quickly, ripping some of the interior ceiling down, getting some water on it, and extinguishing the fire.”

A woman who was the lone occupant of the fourth floor apartment suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The building was evacuated but most residents were able to return.

The Victoria Fire Department says two suites were damaged by fire and another three had slight water damage.

Victoria Emergency Social Services were activated to ensure those affected are taken care of over the next few days.

Damage is estimated at $100,000.
