One man has died after a late-night crash involving a Brinks armoured truck in Courtenay Sunday.

Emergency crews responded to the Comox Valley Parkway west of Piercy Avenue at around 11:30 p.m. to find a two-vehicle crash.

A Brinks armoured truck was on the road and a white Mercedes sedan had gone off the road into a ditch. Both vehicles had front end damage.

Police said the driver in the Mercedes was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and occupants of the Brinks truck were not seriously injured.

Police said the investigation is in its preliminary stages but investigators were able to determine the Mercedes crossed over the centre line before colliding, head-on, with the armoured truck.

Road conditions around the time of the crash were bare and wet. The surface had recently been brined by road maintenance crews.

“Investigators are looking for witnesses who observed the collision or the vehicle prior to the collision, or who may have dash-cam footage” Const. Monika Terragni, the Comox Valley RCMP media relations officer, said in a statement.

Anyone who has information about the collision is asked to call the Comox Valley RCMP at (250) 338-1321 and refer to file number 2020-312.

The Comox Valley Parkway was closed for several hours as police investigated.
