One man in medically-induced coma following assault at Pier 66 in Cowichan Bay

One man is still in hospital after an assault on Pier 66 in Cowichan Bay at the end of May.

According to police, on May 28 at 10 p.m., North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP were called to the report of an assault on Pier 66 in Cowichan Bay. When first responders arrived, they found a 58-year-old man from Cowichan Bay with serious, potentially life-threatening, injuries. The man was taken to hospital in Victoria, according to a friend who has set up a GoFundMe for the victim’s wife, Anita.
Police said they have determined the victim confronted a 41-year-old man from Cowichan Bay and a 49-year-old from Sidney for allegedly urinating off the pier. According to police, a physical altercation ensued and the victim hit his head after he was struck by one of the men. They were released from custody pending the outcome of the investigation.

The other two men were arrested at the scene for assault causing bodily harm. Police said the investigation is continuing a report of the findings will go to the BC Prosecution Service for consideration of appropriate charges.

“We have interviewed a number of witnesses and received cell phone video from one witness. We are asking anyone who has not already spoken to police and has information about this incident to call us,” Insp. Chris Bear, officer in charge of North Cowichan Duncan RCMP, said in a statement.

According to the GoFundMe, the victim’s name was Jody and he sustained two cracks in his skull and had hemorrhaging his left frontal cortex. Kat Marie Skakun wrote that he had surgery and is in a medically-induced coma, ” and will be for the next 7-10 days.”

“Doctors anticipate that even after Jody wakes up, he will be in the hospital for many months- it could even be upwards of a year.”

The GoFundMe has been set up to help Anita travel from Cowichan Bay to Victoria. As of Wednesday afternoon, it is close to reaching its current goal of $2,000.
