One man died in a fire near Campbell River on Feb. 7, 2018.

The BC Coroners Service says one man has died in a residential fire near Campbell River Wednesday morning.

“One of our tenants came to the door to let us know there was a fire in Cabin 2 so I grabbed the phone and ran out and called 911 and by that time, flames were coming out of the windows and out of the roof,” said Donna Kurpiela, manager of the Glen Alder RV Park on Hightway 19A, south of Campbell River.

Tragically she knew the resident, named Gord, was probably still inside and they did what they could to try to alert him to the fire.

“Yeah Gord has lived here since 2003,” said Kurpiela. “I knew he was home unfortunately because his truck was here and he doesn’t go anywhere without his truck.”

“I threw a rock through the window and after I did that yelled his name a few times and no response,” said Saje Kurpiela. “Just to see if he would answer to see if you were still alive.”

The fire department arrived within a few minutes and knocked down the flames but they were unable to save the resident.

The victim’s identity has not been released by police.

The BC Coroner’s Service says he was in his late 60s or early 70s.

The is no word on what caused the fire.
